Abdel: Last of the spots

Finished up the spots on the stripes on Abdel's robe.

I also went over the highlights on his turban with bright red ink. I'm not sure if it's better or not, but it is subtly different.

Abdel: More spots.

Continued with the spots in the stripes (!) on Abdel's robe. I think one more evening should finish the spots, then I'll probably revisit the turban highlights briefly, then get back to the robe.

Abdel: Spots. Noxious: Basing Skin.

Started adding spots in the dark stripes on Abdel's robe, per the picture I'm using as a model. I am liking it so far; I think it kinda breaks things up a little. It's going to take me a while to finish, though. I have to do the spots, then go back and clean the edges of each one up and fix the lengths and spacing. Repeating patterns...I am not good with.

I think for my next large scale piece, no freehand, no textures. Oh, I also remembered...I have fluorescent red acrylic ink that I bought specifically for glazing red highlights. Duh. I am going to pull that out and see if it helps pop the highlights on the turban up a bit.

I also put a base coat on Noxious's skin.

Abdel: More strips. Noxious: Primer.

Continued on adding stripes to Abdel.

Next will be to put dots in the stripes.

Also put primer on Noxious. Not really that interesting, but here he is primed.

Abdel: Stripes. Noxious. Class demo #2.

I found a photo of some patterned cloth to use as a sample for Abdel. I started putting the first round of stripes on. Didn't get very far, but I'm slow with this kind of thing and got a late start with him.

I finished my second demo figure today. Here he is:

Here he is with the first one:

And lastly, I've been prepping another gladiator figure. Finally got him mostly put together and patched up today. This is Noxious:

He's also got a shield, but that will go on last.

Abdel: Glaze. Class Demo #2

I glazed Abdel's highlights with some clear red to put the red hue back.

I lost more lightness than I'd have liked, but I haven't decided if I'm going to try to tweak it some more or not.

In the meantime, I also put some shading and highlighting on the 'shirt' - that little bit in the middle of his chest. Next I'll either futz with the turban some more, or else go on to the orange robe. I may try putting a pattern on it.

I also started on the next demo figure for class with a round of shadows.

Abdel: More Highlight. Class Demo 1.

Did the next round of highlights on Abdel's turban. Next will be glazing it back to red.

Also did the highlights on this class demo figure.

Abdel: Highlights.Class demo 1

I added a first round of highlights to Abdel's turban.

I'm going to go with another lighter round of highlights, then glaze them back to red. That's why I'm being fairly generous with the highlight area and sloppy with the transitions - I know I'm going to be glazing it all over later anyway.

I also put in a little work on one of my class demo minis:

There's not enough yet to show what the class topic is, but it'll become clearer as I go.

Abdel: Shading turban

I continued shading Abdel's turban today, taking the shadows to blue and adding a darker bit in the very deepest parts.

The blue makes the red pop more, and it will have even more pop when I get the highlights on.

2!

Finished up the relic today. I like her, for all that she was a quick paint on a badly prepped mini.

I also got back to Abdel today.

This is just a first round of shadow on the turban. The next round, I'll go to blues for the shadows. Also, I decided to stick with the colors as they are. I still don't love it, but I'm going to push through it.

Relic: Most everything else

So, it has been a few days. I wasn't feeling motivated to paint, so I took a break. Now I'm back, and I got to work on finishing the relic.

She's mostly done. I might go back and pick out the ties on her pants, I might not. Other than that, all I have to do is finish the base, which I should be able to get done pretty quick tomorrow. If I wanted to try to perfect this piece, or at least get it closer, I'd start by cleaning up some of the lines on the swords. They are pretty sloppy right now.

Relic: Skin, Hair, Clothes. Class minis.

I've been having a problem with motivation the last couple days. The pieces I have in progress just aren't appealing to me, so I'm not feeling all that interested in working on them. So, I'm going to treat Relic like a speed paint exercise, and try to do adequate quality as quickly as I can. I was going to try to finish her all at once this afternoon, but I got a late start and then had to stop early. So, I'll try to get her done with one more sitting.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with Abdel. I might try to push through, or I might change up his color scheme to something I like better - yes, I was using colors outside my comfort zone on purpose as a personal challenge, but it's not useful if it translates to not working on him at all.

The other thing I worked on today was starting a set of figures I'm going to use as demo pieces in a class I'm prepping for next ReaperCon. In time, it will become clear what the class is about.

Relic: Shading skin

Not much progress today; I got a late start. I worked on shading the Relic's skin.

Abdel: Rethinking colors. Bombshell Babe Relic #4.

Today I went back and tweaked the colors on Abdel just a bit.

I've switched to a less saturated orange, and moved to more of a beige than yellow (though on the figure it still looks pretty yellow). I don't love it yet, but this is better. A little less painful to look at.

I also started a figure from the Box of Pre-Primed Minis. This is Relic #4 from the Bombshell Babes kickstarter (the first one).

She had seriously fuzzy primer and a lot of scratches from when I cleaned her up. I put on a couple coats of brush-on sealer to try to reduce all that. In any case, this is a pretty simple sculpt that shouldn't take long to paint up. I'd been thinking about trying zenithal priming once again with this figure, but then I realized she's not going to have much that's that interesting going on with her shadows and highlights because she's so simple - no drapery or anything like that. So I'll save that experiment for another day, and just paint this one.

1!

Finished up Infelix today. He needs his coat of sealer still, but other than that he's done.

I also blocked in colors on Abdel. I like the red, I'm fine with the yellow, but I'm not sure about the orange.

As you can see, I also changed his eyes to blue. With the warm colors on the rest of him, going with a cool color for his eyes will make them show up that much more.
