115!

Yes, it's been quite a while since an update. I was at Reaper HQ for their artist con and Kickstarter wrap up party. It was a great time and I worked on a number of things while I was there, both painting and sculpting.

I got this guy mostly finished while I was there, and then finished up a few details once I got home. I got lots of input from artists at Reaper on this guy, so thanks to all for the helpful feedback.

I also worked on this guy while I was away. I'm experimenting with stuff on this one, so the end quality is not going to be as high. It's quite subtle, but you may be able to notice some green in the shadows of the cloak, and purple and green in the shadows of his blouse and trousers. The colors on the cloak and pants are dark enough that it doesn't show that much. I still need to work on this technique.

I also started this guy. Just the base coat on the skin. He'll probably stay like this for a while as I'm going to concentrate on finishing the swashbuckler and the lizard man I was working on before I left.

I forgot to get pictures of the sculpting I did while I was away. I'll try to remember to get those tomorrow.

114!

Finished the cleric's base today. That puts me ten away from my goal for number of minis painted this year.

Also shaded and highlights the lizard man's leather and worked on his armor. Hopefully he'll be done in another day or two.

Almost there

Almost got the cleric finished today; just need to do the rest of her base. I should have finished the base before gluing her shield arm on. :p I wasn't able to continue working on it without disturbing the drying glue. As you can see, I also repainted her tabard. I'm pretty happy with the results. Thought about doing some freehand. Didn't have any bright ideas on what to do, though, and I decided I'd rather be done, so...no freehand.

Beige, but boring?

I finished the cleric's boots and base coated the tabard beige. It'll go fine, color-wise, with the rest of the mini, but...it seems kinda dull. I'm considering switching it to a slightly desaturated yellowish orange. I think it'll still all go, but that would also be a rather more varied and adventurous color scheme than I usually go with. I might have to spend some quality time with my color wheel and think about it.

And, I gave the lizard eyes, toes, and teeth. Not much else to say there.

With luck, I might be able to finish both of these this weekend.

Moving along.

Put a base coat on the lizard man's leather bits. I meant to do eyes and claws,  but got distracted.

I got distracted by the cleric, particularly doing the NMM on her armor. Also put a dark brown base coat on her boots and gloves.Still haven't decided if she's going to have a red tabard and beige cloak or the other way around.

113!

Here's Mr. Lizard with his base finished. I'm a bit bummed that I can't find my yellow leaf litter. Guess I'm gonna have to really sort through my supplies to try to find it. The leaf litter that is there has gotten a bit frosty from the glue.:p

And, lizard #2. Works on his crest today. Tomorrow he'll get eyes, claws, and toenails, at least.

And, I did shading and highlighting on the cleric's shirt and trousers. Next for her will be the chain mail, armor plates on her leg, and maybe things like her boots and gloves.

Just a base away

Finished up the lizard man apart from the basing. I'll have to wait for some glue to dry before finishing the base. For a guy I wasn't real excited about working on, he's not too bad.

And, I worked on the cleric's hair and started her clothing. Once the pants and shirt are done, her armor will be next. I was planning on doing the tabard in reddish brown and the cloak in ivory, but I may swap that. Haven't decided yet. She is carrying a shield, and once that's in place it'll hide most of her front midsection there.

Moving along...

The lizard man got eyes, teeth, and armor today. Still need to shade and highlight the armor. I went with bronze, though I'm not sure it stands out enough from the leather. I can still fix that, though. His sword is going to be steel. I haven't decided about the necklace yet. Also found more leather straps that I need to get, too. They're hidden behind the metal plate on his right arm.

Also got back to the cleric today. Worked on her face and put a base coat on her hair. I may need to futz with her face a little more. I was happy with how it looks in person, but a bit less happy with the pictures. I'll look again tomorrow and see what I think.I do need to clean up some of the shading on her neck a bit.

112!

Here's the scorpions with their bases finished. The base color is a little too similar to the light bits, so they kind of blend together.Still, they'll do.

And I worked on the lizard man. Finished up the light brown cloth/leather.Also put highlights on the feathers on his crest. Oh, and did his claws. The last batch of lizard men, I have copper metals. This one...these guys are clearly better equipped. I'm debating between a blue-ish steel or bronze.

Almost done with the scorpions

I worked exclusively on the scorpions tonight, and got them almost finished. I'm going to paint some stippled texture on to the bases, and then they'll be done. I think my other scorpions are better. These will do for gaming, though.

Lizards and bugs

Working away on the scorpions and the lizard man tonight. For the lizard man, I put some dark brown on over the black wash, and base coated the lighter parts. I'll shade the lighter bits next. The dark brown will get some brighter highlights eventually, too.

And the lizard man. I went with purple for the feathers, and I'm pretty happy with it. Also base coated the cloth/leather he's wearing. Tomorrow I'll finish detailing the feathers and start shading the brown.

Moving Along...

I'm 16 minis away from making my desired paint-to-buy ratio for the year. So, I'm going to push to finish off at least 16 more figures by the end of the year. That's about 5 per month, which should be doable.

So, for starters, here's progress on the one-of-three lizard men. I brightened up the highlights a bit, and put shading and highlighting on the crests. I haven't yet decided what to do with the feathers in the crest. Maybe yellow? Maybe purple?

And, I started some more creepy crawlies. These are more Bones. I'm working on four of them, but there's just one in the picture because they look much the same. I'm hoping they go quickly. He's got a base coat of brown and a black wash. I'll bring the brown back a little, but not much - in the picture I'm working off of, their bodies are quite dark.

And I started a human tonight too. This is a cleric from Dark Sword. I plan to work carefully on her, not just for table top quality. Dark Sword minis tend to be a bit too delicate for table top use, in my experience. Her mace has already been bent a couple times.

108!

The theme for today was 'finish stuff'. I want to clear off some things that have been sitting on my table for a while.

So, first, Lysette. I buzzed through finishing her off, so some of the details aren't as good as they could be. But she'll do. Anybody need a female elven mage in their game?

And, my sculpting practice dummy. Back when I did the sticks, I knew this one wasn't going to be great. And he isn't. So, I used it to practice some other things - putting a seam in on the 'head', and a torn spot in the body with some straw sticking out. I think my biggest problem is that I'm tending to use too much putty, which makes everything bigger than it should be (he's taller than Lysette) and also makes it more prone to that blobby sort of look. I've got another armature made, so I'll try another one soon.

And, the lizard men. I'm going to try to tackle them one at a time instead of a group, and hope that helps me get through them. I think trying to face the whole group as a mass was too much.
