Probably not a competition piece.

So, I don't think Larry here is going to be good enough for competition; at least, I don't think he's going to be as good as the elf girl. I'm going to try to finish him anyway and take him for feedback. I'm honestly not sure if I'm screwing something up or if it's just that I'm using a color palette I'm not used to, with a level of contrast I'm not used to. So I'll at least get some opinions on the thing.

Anyway, today I darkened the shadows on the orange robe back down a bit and did the sleeves and trousers. I need to re-line a couple of spots by his hands.

  1. Personally, I think Larry is turning out wonderfully. I like him better than the elf girl! I'm very impressed with the skin tone; dark flesh is not easy to highlight convincingly and I think you've done a very nice job of it. I also like the intense, almost fiery, orange of the robes. You might try painting the hood, mantle and sleeves purple, which will harmonize nicely with the orange and I think it will also look great against his dark skin. The overall effect will be rich and warm, and you could go with a cool blue or green on the crystal ball for complementary contrast.

Anyway, I'm absolutely loving this one so far, and I look forward to seeing your progress.

  2. Thanks for the vote of confidence! :) There are some other issues with this guy, like if you look closely at the toward the bottom of the front side of his left sleeve, there's some grooves and roughness left from filing. There's a couple other flaws like that that don't show up in the pictures.

I do love those fiery robes. The same thing happened when I shaded a couple of the Blood Vestal's red hair with purple. That really seems to make the reds/oranges stand up and say, "HI! I'M ORANGE!".

    1. Yes, the purple really does make the orange stand out. I've had a lot of success shading the folds of red robes with a dark green; it really makes the red pop.
